HISTORY -

The Lincoln-Martí Camporee was established in 1971, in order to bring together Scouts from the various diverse communities that make up South Florida. The camporee objectives are:
  • To bring closer together in true brotherhood, Scouts from all nations, races, creeds and ideals.
  • To promote fellowship and a better understanding of Scouting principles.
  • To better prepare youth leaders with additional training and ideals.
  • To encourage advancement, generate interest and enthusiasm within the Scouting Program, and to encourage boys to continue on the Eagle
    Scout Path.
  • To provide Scouts with wholesome fun, exciting adventure and camping experiences.
  • To prepare inexperienced Scouts and leave them with a memorable camping experience which will be useful in future District, Council
    and National Camporees.
  • To coach and instruct Scouts and Scouters on changes within the Scouting Program.
  • To promote conservation of our natural resources.
  • To honor the memories of two great men, Abraham Lincoln of the United States and José Martí of Cuba, whom by destiny shared almost identical philosophies.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865) Abraham Lincoln was one of the truly great men of all time. He preserved the American Union during the Civil War and proved to the world that democracy can be a lasting form of government. Lincoln's "Gettysburg Address" and many of his other speeches and writings are classic statements of democratic beliefs and goals. Lincoln was the first President elected by the Republican Party. His great asset was his ability to express his convictions so clearly and with such force that millions of his countrymen made them their own. His great source of strength was his iron will. Life in the United States during Lincoln's administration revolved almost entirely around the Civil War. To raise money to fight the war, Congress levied the first income tax in the history of the country. An assassin's bullet ended this great man's life in 1865.

JOSÉ JULIÁN MARTÍ (1853-1895) José Julián Martí was a Cuban patriot, author and journalist. He dedicated his life to Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain and became known to his people as "The Apostle". Martí was jailed and exiled many times for his revolutionary writings and activities. He emerged from each setback with greater strength and appeal. Martí's books of verse, including Ismaelillo (1882) and Simple Verses(1891), show him to be a sensitive and sincere poet. His journalism set new standards of brilliance in Latin America. Martí was born in Havana. He lived in exile in the United States from 1881 to 1896. He wrote many articles about life in the United States. He founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party in 1892. He was ambushed and killed during armed combat against the Spanish forces in Dos Ríos in 1895.

THE CARLOS J. ARBOLEYA CAMPING AND PICNIC GROUNDS -

We thank the City of Miami for their foresight in agreeing with Carlos Arboleya to preserve this area for the community to be used for camping and picnics. On January 25th, 1978, the City of Miami Commission passed a resolution naming the grounds at Flagler Street and NW 70th Avenue in Miami the "Carlos J. Arboleya Camping and Picnic Grounds" in recognition of his dedication and effort in the preservation of the park for the use of the community's youth.

Carlos led a one man campaign against a group that wanted the camping grounds converted into a velodrome. The City of Miami does not have many camping facilities within the city, he quickly recruited support of the many civic organizations which use the park, amoong which of course, were the Boy and Girl Scouts. He wrote hundreds of letters, compiled statistics, appeared many times before commission meetings on this matter, and finally won his fight, not only in preserving the grounds but in providing and having the City of Miami Commission agree to build the velodrome in an unusual area of the city which now has little use, everyone gaining by his efforts and leadership; as a result, the park now bears his name, and on March 4th, 1978, the City of Miami held the official inaugural celebration of these camping facilities named after him.
